Are you a mom feeling overstimulated by the constant clutter in your home, hanging on the brink of burnout? If so, you're not alone in this struggle to find peace amidst the chaos. Life with children can get hectic pretty quickly, but there's hope! Let me introduce you to a simple yet effective de-cluttering method that can help lighten the mental load and bring a sense of calm to your daily life.
How to Start De-Cluttering
Start Small: Find a de-cluttering basket
As a professional organizer, mom of three, and burnout survivor, I understand the toll a cluttered environment can take on one's mental well-being. The key is to start small. Find a basket dedicated to decluttering, or purchase one designed for this purpose. Commit just 5 minutes a day to tackle one room or area in your home.
Practice The 5-Minute De-cluttering Rule
Set a 5 min timer, take a deep breath, and begin. Scan the room and identify items that "do not belong" in a certain area (have another home), are not in use and/or have been sitting idle for over a year. These are the clutter culprits that need to go or be put back to their "home". As you come across such items, place them in the decluttering basket.
Follow with the 5-Minute Clearing the Clutter Rule
Once your 5 minutes are up, divide the items in the de-cluttering basket to two sections or boxes earmarked for donation and disposal. Then put away anything has a home within your home. Over time, you'll notice a significant difference in the atmosphere of your home as you free up space and reduce visual noise.

Embracing Change for a Clearer Mind
De-cluttering isn't just about tidying up physical spaces; it's about decluttering your mind. By letting go of unnecessary belongings, you create room for a clearer mindset. As a busy (and constantly overstimulated) mom juggling multiple responsibilities, simplifying your surroundings can have a profound effect on your mental well-being.
Beyond Organization
As someone who has experienced extreme burnout and emerged through it, I'm here to share tips and strategies that have worked for me. Remember, decluttering is a process, not a one-time task. It will be a continuous thing so find a way to make it easy and as enjoyable as you can. Celebrate the small victories along the way and don't hesitate to seek support when needed.
In Conclusion
To all the overstimulated, stressed, and busy moms out there, know that you're not alone. Taking that first step towards decluttering can bring a sense of relief and clarity that extends beyond your home. It may actually make other aspects of you life easier! Start small, embrace change, practice letting go, and watch as the weight of clutter lifts off your shoulders, one "5-minute basket" at a time.
Whether you follow the 5-minute rule or embark on the de-cluttering restart challenge, the important thing is to take that first step towards a more organized and peaceful home. Let's declutter together and reclaim our sanctuary from the chaos of everyday life.
